L E A R N   P O R T R A I T U R E   WITH  Heather Dillenbeck

The human face is one of the most fascinating avenues of exploration for the artist. It requires perhaps the most accurate perception of any subject matter and for this reason is often a source of frustration for many people. This course will offer techniques which simplify the process of drawing the face and provide a base of knowledge from which to build a skilled technique for portraiture. There are endless variations in the approach to portraiture and we will explore the fundamental principles of portraiture and then attempt to personalize these principles to suit your own unique style. Working from models, we will study the basic anatomy of the head and then proceed on to the methods of particularizing the features so as to accurately portray a specific individual. We will be drawing in pencil, conte, and charcoal: beginning with line and then introducing value and ultimately colour. Discussion of both contemporary and traditional approaches will provide opportunity for those already involved in portraiture to expand their boundaries and exposure for those just beginning the journey to the fundamental principles of portraiture!
