Conté is a traditional medium used for centuries to create spectacular works of art. It is essentially pure pigment mixed with a relatively hard binder that makes it more stable and much easier to work with than soft pastel. Recently, it has become available in a wide range of colours, although its traditional application is with a simple range of earth tones. With exciting potential, conté is ideally suited for loose sketching and for intricate drawing.  Many prefer it to charcoal, simply because it is much less messy. We will explore conté in its traditional context and in a more contemporary approach. We will explore drawing techniques with this medium and then create a finished piece of work that utilizes the techniques we have learned.
